Viewing Platform Conception

SketchUp Model

An extensive feat of self conducted research began this project, in which the 'GNR Warehouse' site was analyzed, as well as two precedents in which their focus were rejuvenating a decrepit historic building, and provided a place of play and social space for a specific community. Both of which came into play in designing a skate park in the abandoned GNR building on the outskirts of Nottingham's industrial district. One scheme was small and intimate allowing me to design places of rest and friendly chat, also noting the incorporation of ruin details that were listed and therefore incorporated into the scheme.

The second precedent allowed me to establish the average size of skating obstacles and equipment, speak to people in the industry, both skaters and hospitality staff, to ensure my building was designed in accordance to what is trending, and what is essential to make the park work.

Before the design of the entire skate park went underway, I had to first design a single component. My chosen space being a viewing platform overlook the skating bowl and any other activity that may ensue. I wanted to harness the local gritty vernacular and so recorded through writing and drawing, rubbish, materials and textures found on and around the site. The aim was to be savvy with the recycled elements, harnessing trash which would both furnish the warehouse's interior, and clean up the exterior at the same time.

I then theorized a seating area made out of disposed car tires, filled with either concrete or compacted earth, in order to create a sporting motif, but to also create a stimulating texture and smooth, supple and interesting look to mimic the curvature of the skating obstacles and the general relaxed atmosphere radiating off of the young people.

Designing the actual platform and its placement however was a slightly harder task, which began with the analysis of youth culture and in particular, graffiti. Beginning with the recreation of certain tags I had seen, I split and simplified them as more abstract forms to deduce the subconscious shapes made. Present more often than not was this slick curvature, in contrast to the jarring angles. this I found to be quite symbolic of youth culture.

To conclude, I formulated a scaffolding structure to suspend the platform above other facilities and rooms, which I idealised as steel to match those left behind as the GNR warehouse crumbled over years upon years of disuse.

My SketchUp model was build in floor plan sections and then stacked and inserted by clipping the given floor by a corner into the same said corner of the GNR warehouse building so it hopped in. The plans were made in two dimensions and the walls then dragged to the correct height using the three-dimension tool. This made it very easy to ensure all the walls were of the same height, and in the right place in relation to each other, because the value of their heights could simply be typed and inserted.

The roof structure was inspired by my past viewing platform and graffiti work, with its sleek undulations contrasted by the straight, angular and heavy reinforcement of the steel roof structure beneath. An outdoor skating area also provides a change of scenery and better thermal conditions on a warmer day.
