Hand Rendering Techniques

YEAR 2 -

This project in IDS focused on hand rendering, in particular a specific office building I had modeled in Revit, as thus, needed to make a plan, section, and three-dimensional render using fine-liners and markers, pencil, and watercolour paints respectively. To begin, I practiced different techniques such as how to create texture, mimic materiality, blend pencil, in preparation for the final renders. For my renders I wanted to add not just style but storytelling, so came up with the themes of a crime scene in plan, and an Office Christmas Party in section. Uniquely adding coloured pencil to this render to contrast the party atmosphere with those still at work on the floors above. I used pointillism for the shading in my fine-liner render, adding texture and colour to the trees the grass and the concrete. with the police sirens as a finishing touch.

Phenomenology Film Making

My second year Masterclass activity was to create a film regarding my time in lockdown by myself for 8 weeks.  having never created a film before, I was unfamiliar with the software and the protocols of recording and obtaining the right angles and lighting, so essentially conducted all my research from scratch, starting with the jargon associated with the craft. I then looked into types of shots and the connotations, power play, and audience emotion that plays alongside said shot, in the hopes I could manipulate the audience in the same way.

Following this came looking into films that use their shot types and frame positions to symbolically tell the same narrative, or use interesting devices I could use in my own solo film, such as the camera referencing and 4th wall breaking in the show 'Fleabag'

My Revit Development Diary was made in aid of tracking my progress during the learning and application of a new type of software I had never tried. Each session was run like a step-by-step tutorial, so the support network and instructions were there, but I had to ensure I was constantly critical and/or observative as to my own performance

and understanding.

This process really helped me in relaying all the information I learned back out essentially into my own visual step-by-step to capitalize and solidify my learning. Screenshots were taken at every stage, multiple times,  and my personal positives and gripes I had with the software were implicit in me making a decision as to whether I'd like to use the software in my own design work or not.
