Measured Building Survey and Detail Studies
YEAR 1 -
The Architectural Communication module aimed to expand my measured survey and technical drawing skills. first through a project called 'Azuma House' in which I was given the plans for said house and I had to do a section through it and construct one half out of card for my partner to then align it with the other equivalent half. I also had to produce an isometric and/or axonometric drawing of the building,, as well as two elevations, a short and long section and an isometric section. These could be rendered however I saw fit, and I decide to display some pencil render skills to make the drawings pop of the page and make them all seem three-dimensional.
The building itself was made of reinforced concrete blocks, which I attempted to translate onto my card model using faint pencil lines and dots to show the structure rebar throughout the build.
The immediate context wither side of the building had to be considered i.e.: the neighbors, and the height and shape of their homes. Information that was easily attainable through Google Maps.
My second project for this year was to independently survey the entrance hall in the Arkwright Building on my campus, and from my own calculations, create a set of plans for the ground and first floors, a section, and a detail of my choosing which could be an Ionic column that lined the corridor, a transom, a handrail or a fireplace. i chose the fireplace as I wanted a challenge. The measurements were tiresome, but I knew that I was capable of translating the stone rose detailing, the chips and engravings in the sill and smokestack, the crests and Coats of Arms and the tiling inside the fireplace onto paper.
The long section I chose also allowed me to highlight the arches columns and balustrades present in this same space on both floors, using a laser measuring device to obtain the double height ceiling height.
